We, the initiative injection-site (“Initiative Drogenkonsumraum”; www.i-dk.org), are an open group of concerned or simply interested individuals, of experts and professionals that campaign for safe injection sites in Vienna, Austria. Since decades, legal drug-consumption-spaces exist in various countries in Europe and abroad. Counter-arguments have since long been unable to withstand those of a critical evaluation. Everywhere, it has been shown that hygienic and controlled consumption-facilities pose a win-win-situation for all concerned. For example prevalence-rates of infections are reduced, conflicts in public areas are calmed, and syringe findings have decreased. Consumption-facilities are an economical alternative to police-repression, and most importantly: Consumption-facilities save and preserve lives!
Safe injection sites are overdue for more than 20 years!
We see public relations and outreach work as a central vehicle to stimulate a debate and sensitize the public, as well as official representatives in politics and the government to these issues. For these reasons, we gather information that we make accessible to the public. At the same time, we want to give interested individuals a way to support our initiative (for example through our petition). For those that want to participate in organization or content, we also give the opportunity to engage in shaping the initiative.
We view ourselves as a platform for (political) self-empowerment for concerned and interested people. The i-dk is aiming to provide a framework for committed, interested, or concerned individuals, as well as health practitioners, social workers, psychologists, next of kin of consumers etc., to participate in this social debate in a way that fits their interests, skills, and abilities. On our homepage under “Termine” we provide information about our regular meetings. Expert knowledge is no prerequisite, anyone who wants to participate is cordially invited.
